Overcoming Hair Loss

People all over the world see hair as important. In the west, for instance, almost all brides are prepared for their approach to the altar by the hands of an expert stylist. On that supreme day, their hair style may be the most elaborate they will ever have in their lives. At the opposite extreme, when a young girl of one of the aboriginal tribes of the Amazon jungle reaches puberty the women of the village ceremonially remove all the hairs from her head, one by one. The ritual significance and mystique of hair on these occasions are undeniable.

We use our hair to express our personalities – to conform, to make a statement, to help us feel good, to attract other people. Sometimes our hair even seems to reflect our mood, especially when we are sad or depressed. Our hair is perhaps our most distinctive feature. Any sudden change in its color or style startles our friends and produces comments from our family. Hair is an amazing material.

In the hands of an expert and with the use of modern hair products, it is soft and shining and seems full of life. Strangely, however, hair is dead. Hair, if properly looked after, made to shine with ‘health’.

Yet all too often this ‘crowning glory’ of ours is neglected. And then it can look shoddy, dull and lifeless. It becomes a constant disappointment, all the worse because we know that, however expensive and beautiful our clothes, if our hair looks a mess we won’t be seen as well-groomed, poised and fashionable.

Hair so often fails to do for us exactly what we expected. Its behaviour raises endless questions, sometimes almost despairing: Why did my hair suddenly look such a mess just before that vital interview? Could I have done anything to avoid that happening?

Why did it look fine when I walked out of the salon yesterday, and terrible this morning?

Why, when it had so much volume and ‘body’ when I was on that Mediterranean holiday, has all that gone now I’m at home in November?

Why was the results of that home color so disappointing?

Why does a woman’s hair so often ‘fall out’ after she has had a baby?

Why do so many men (and some women) go bald?

Why does so-and-so’s lovely red hair never perm very well? Why does my hair go out of condition so easily? What can I do to restore it?

All hairs naturally fall out at the end of the growing period. You can lose between 50 and 80 hairs a day. They tend to come out with brushing and shampooing. So if you wash your hair only once a week, it is perfectly in order for you to lose several hundred hairs at one go!

However, it is possible, a person may start to lose more hairs than usual. If this hair loss is significant, and if it persists, then sooner or later the scalp may become visible through the thinning hair. The condition is called alopecia. The name comes from the Greek word alopekia, which means ‘fox’: foxes (and also dogs) sometimes suffer from bald patches due to an unpleasant disease called mange. Hair Loss Treatment – 7 Hair Growth Tips

January 24th, 2010 hair extensions pro No comments

People often take their hair for granted until one day they realize that it is starting thin and fall out. Once you’re in this stage, hair regrowth becomes very difficult to achieve. Thus, it would be better if we start taking care of the health of our hair and scalp now, rather than regret not having done it later on.
A number of factors may influence how our hair will grow and how prone we are to hair loss. These may include hormonal changes, hereditary influences, environmental factors, and health. A change in lifestyle will definitely impact what would become of our hair in the future. Consider following the hair growth tips below in order to encourage the growth of hair strands that are less prone to dryness, breakage, and falling.
(1)Drink the recommended daily amount of water. Water here means pure water; it does not include other drinks such as soft drinks, coffee, and beer. Dehydration can make your entire body feel weak and easily exhausted. It is also another factor in the drying out and breakage of hair, as well as the stopping of its growth. The general rule is that men should drink 2.8 to 3.5 liters of water a day, while women should drink 2 to 2.6 liters daily. Adjust these amounts based on factors like weather condition, age, and weight.
(2)Exercise a couple of times a week. Studies show that a 15-minute brisk walk will increase your normal heart rate. This will then improve the blood circulation in our body, and this will bring more nutrients to our hair follicles and scalp. It would be best to exercise at least an hour after eating in order to give more time for digestion to finish and thus put less pressure on our system.
(3)Maintain a proper diet. Avoid foods that are rich in salt, sugar, and fat. Those three food components would only stress our kidneys and make our blood more acidic, resulting in hair loss.
(4)Drink green tea daily. Doing so will reduce the risk of hair loss. Green tea contains antioxidants that inhibit 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT induces hair loss and an increase in prostate size.
(5)Indulge in aromatherapy. This alternative form of medicine has benefits both on our health and mood. Massaging essential oils, such as lavender and olive, onto our scalp would encourage healthier hair regrowth. Moreover, it would help eliminate stress, which is another factor in hair loss.
(6)Avoid putting any strain on your scalp and hair in the form of tight clips and pony tails. The mechanical action of pulling your hair against the scalp can result in hair loss. Bald patches may arise from plucking out hair from the scalp often. This is known as traction alopecia.
(7)Avoid using heat and chemicals on your hair, such as straightening, perming, coloring, and excessive blow drying. These methods will only weaken the internal structure of your hair and damage its chemical bonds. They may also cause dryness and irritation, making your hair fall out more easily.

Hair Loss Treatment with Lasers

October 28th, 2009 hair extensions pro No comments

We’ve all heard about the marvels of lasers, from the technological breakthroughs in laser surgery to whitening teeth. But did you know that there have been breakthroughs using lasers as a hair loss treatment using low-light lasers? In fact, the technology behind lasers as a hair loss treatment, also called “laser hair regrowth therapy” has been around for more than twenty years, and has been used extensively in Europe successfully treating hair loss. Only in the past decade have low-light lasers come into widespread use in laser hair regrowth therapy here in the Unites States. Hand-held laser devices have recently been approved by the FDA as a hair loss treatment, giving it a new credibility it has long enjoyed in Europe. While studies show that some 90% of clients who use laser hair regrowth therapy as a hair loss treatment method see a marked change in the quality of their hair, its thickness and its shedding, there’s more to the story than that. A reputable laser hair loss clinic will tell you what many other clinics won’t tell you: that hair loss is a complex issue and your results will vary depending on the care you get.  If you choose a hair loss treatment like laser hair regrowth therapy, you will want to visit a reputable practitioner for best results that will address your individual hair loss situation. So what are the top five things you should know when looking into laser hair regrowth therapy?• When choosing a hair loss treatment, seek out a multi-therapeutic approach – While steady and effective laser hair regrowth therapy will make a difference in your hair, your best results will be seen using a multi-therapeutic approach. What does that mean?  It means taking advantage of all the technology out there.  What we know is that the major cause of male and female pattern baldness is the excess of something called DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) in the scalp. DHT effectively cuts off the nutrition of a hair follicle (oxygen, blood supply, nutrients.)  With laser hair regrowth therapy the low-light laser penetrates this level of the skin, counteracting the DHT and allowing a richer blood flow to reach the hair follicle. But used in conjunction with a hair loss treatment such as DHT inhibitors like Rogaine, Propecia and/or Minoxidil with 5% saw palmetto can greatly improve the quality of the hair loss treatment. Products like these help to stop shedding in its tracks, giving the laser hair regrowth therapy a chance to work. Also, shampoos that inhibit DHT with products like saw palmetto and other DHT-blocking herbs promote a healthy scalp can improve circulation and overall effectiveness of laser hair regrowth therapy.• Length of Treatment – Contrary to popular myth, use of laser hair regrowth therapy is not a one-stop shopping experience. It’s a long-term hair loss treatment; a real commitment and results will not begin to be seen until a client has been using the clinic’s low light laser for at least three months. That’s partly due to the hair’s life cycle. As new hair begins to emerge, it comes in thicker and stronger. But most successful clients make a commitment of between 1-2 years of office visits and then maintain their new, healthier hair with a hand-held home laser, an important and inexpensive part of the hair loss treatment.• With laser hair regrowth therapy, the more diodes the better – Diodes are the little points of light emitted by a low-light laser. In a typical clinic low-light laser, there are diodes placed strategically in the curved surface of the machine that can treat the entire scalp at once. But make sure you look for the number of diodes your machine has. The more diodes, the better (more effectively) the laser will work. This is why, for laser hair regrowth therapy, hand-held lasers (which use fewer diodes) are preferred for maintenance, not the initial hair loss treatment.• Consult an expert in laser hair regrowth therapy – There are many less-than-legit hair loss treatment clinics opening up, claiming to know the business.  Anyone can purchase a low light laser and call himself an expert. But an expert clinic will employ both doctors specializing in hair loss treatment, and knowledgeable hair loss consultants on their teams. When you decide to look into laser hair regrowth therapy, be sure to check the pedigree of the clinic you’re visiting. The laser hair loss experts you are seeking have been in business for a long time and have great reputations that are easily researched online. Experts at these hair loss treatment clinics can tell you exactly what you need and what will and won’t work for your particular hair loss condition. Don’t settle for less than the best.

Restore Hair Growth – Natural Hair Loss Treatment

October 27th, 2009 hair extensions pro No comments

I managed to stop my hair loss in it’s tracks and restore healthy natural hair growth again using simple techniques. This article explains how I did it, and how this new approach to hair loss can help you too.

I’m Paul Taylor and I suffered hair loss from androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness) for seven long years. When my hair loss began to rapidly develop, I was only 23 and found I was totally unable to accept it. I needed help. And I needed it fast!

So, obviously my first approach was to ask the experts.

Being very technically minded, these were some of the questions I posed to these hair loss professionals:

1. How can DHT (dihydrotestosterone – a testosterone derivative) be linked to both hair loss and hair growth? (DHT stimulates facial and body hair growth at puberty).

2. Why do some people lose hair only from the front (receding temples) or back of the scalp (a bald patch) whilst others lose hair from both these regions simultaneously?

3. Why is it that hair loss can develop in one of these regions faster than it does in the other?

4. Why does remnant hair sometimes continue to grow despite extensive hair loss throughout the rest of the scalp? (Remnant hair is healthy permanent hair surrounded by baldness).

5. Why do 20% of men start losing hair at puberty, while others don’t start until they’re much older?

I considered these questions extremely relevant to the hair loss process and, as such, quite straightforward for a hair loss specialist to answer.

But every hair loss expert I asked was unable to provide answers!

This, I found extremely surprising, and disappointing because it gave the impression that they didn’t fully understand the hair loss mechanism. And, if they didn’t know, how could I ever rid myself of this problem?

But I had to find a solution – a way to restore strong, natural hair growth. Even if it meant doing it on my own!

So that’s when I started extremely time-consuming work: to find the answers to those questions.

After seven years of research, I finally began to understand where all those hair loss “experts” were going wrong:

The mechanism that causes androgenetic alopecia involves skull bone growth (or skull expansion). Skull expansion is the real reason why you’re losing your hair!

For some people this process will take place (and lead to extensive hair loss) but for others it will not. For those men who go completely bald, a very pronounced domed skull shape will eventually develop. But, for those who will never lose their hair and continue to enjoy healthy natural hair growth throughout life, a very broad flat forehead and a flat crown to the skull is nearly always present.

Buying a Hairpiece

October 10th, 2009 hair extensions pro No comments

A hair system can be any type of borrowed hair in the form of a full wig, hairpiece, weave, hair extension or a toupee, which replaces your own missing hair. Hair systems are often the only remaining option to replace the lost hair and to regain the appearance of a full head of hair. The quality and the price of hair systems depend on a variety of factors, such as the type of hair used, the production process used to weave the wig, the foundation of the hair system and how it is attached to the scalp.

The type of hair is the first thing many buyers will ask about. Both natural and artificial hair can be used. The natural hair can be of human or animal origin. Some hair systems blend human hair with animal hair to save on cost. The human hair can be of Asian origin (the least expensive option), Indian origin or European origin (the most expensive option). Asian and Indian hair must be often bleached, which makes it brittle and less durable. Considering the harvesting methods, virgin hair is the most expensive and hair gained from combs and hairbrushes the least expensive option. Human hair requires more care than artificial hair but it looks much more authentic, lasts longer and is more comfortable to wear. Its downside is its higher cost and the fact that it can lose its colour when exposed to direct sunshine for long hours or break, as normal human hair does.

As far as the manufacturing process is concerned, hair systems can be hand-tied or machine-tied. Hand-tied wigs can also be custom made, which happens to be the most expensive alternative. The foundation of a hair system can be either a polymer or a mesh. The polymer foundation is a more affordable but also a less comfortable option. A mesh structure breathes better than polymer structures and is therefore more comfortable to wear but, besides being more expensive, it is also a less durable alternative and more difficult to maintain. Mesh is suitable for creating authentic-looking hairlines, so many wigs combine both technologies, mesh for the hairline and the polymer structure for the inside of the wig.

The method of attaching a wig to your scalp and blending it with your existing hair is an immensely important factor (more info: http://www.greyhairloss.com/hair-replacement.html). There are semi-permanently attached hair systems that are either glued to your scalp or woven into your existing hair and these can only be removed in a hair salon once every five or six weeks for cleaning. These systems cling tightly to your scalp and can be unhealthy and uncomfortable to wear after a couple of weeks of use. The temporarily-attached hair systems use double-sided sticky tape or clips to fix the hairpiece to your scalp and existing hair. They can be removed and cleaned any time you wish but can also be easily and unexpectedly removed, leading to embarrassing situations.

The final, determining factor when deciding on buying a hair system is the price. Any hair system is temporary in nature, it will not last for ever like hair transplants do. Nevertheless, they can be quite expensive. Hair transplants can cost as much as ten thousand dollars or more. Although you can get a wig for a few hundred dollars, the more authentic pieces cost a few thousand dollars and require regular maintenance costing a couple of hundred dollars a month. In addition, you have to buy at least two identical pieces, one to wear while the other is being maintained by your hair salon. Though not cheap, hair systems are often the only option to replace the lost hair for many alopecia areata patients, as well as a large percentage of female hair loss sufferers.
